Virat Kohli’s IPL Evolution Powers
One of the tales of IPL 2026 has been the evolution of Virat Kohli as a T20 batter and cricket experts Tom Moody and Varun Aaron attributed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru star’s success this season to a mix of freedom, belief, and a stronger batting line-up around him.
In IPL 2026, Kohli still managed to finish with one of his highest strike rates for an entire edition of the tournament at 165.85. The senior batsman was instrumental in guiding RCB to their second IPL title in a row, finishing with an imperiously assured unbeaten innings of 75 runs off just 42 balls during the final.
Kohli seems to be playing with the least amount of pressure he has ever experienced. The former Australian all-rounder claimed that Kohli approached batting with a sense of responsibility and control but this season he looked much more relaxed and free spirited.
What stands out for me is how much Kohli is enjoying his batting, Moody said. Until last year, he appeared to be getting the hang of it in the middle. Now he has surrendered all that and is allowing the joyful experience. Class and brilliance is coming out in more boundaries at an eviscerating strike rate.
The shift is backed up by stats. Kohli looked for boundaries on about half the balls he faced in the powerplay and remained aggressive throughout. His inclination towards utilization of aggressiveness has enabled him to adjust and flourish in up-to-date T20 I cricket.
Former India pace bowler Varun Aaron feels the improved RCB batting department has made a significant contribution to Kohli’s growth. With Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, Tim David, Krunal Pandya and the likes of Phil Salt and Venkatesh Iyer lending deeper and power hitting support, Kohli is no longer expected to anchor the innings single-handedly.
Aaron said: “Now he knows even if he gets out there are decent batters to come in behind him. Having that trust means he can take on bowlers from the very start and play with freedom.
Former India batter Ambati Rayudu also praised Kohli’s changed mindset, claiming that he was now tackling T20 cricket with a new sense of intent to pick every ball and go for boundaries rather than bat deep.
While RCB celebrates yet another successful champagne season, Kohli’s successful reinvention has become one of the main reasons behind the franchise’s continued dominance and his own incredible renaissance in T20 cricket.
