For England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has been retained by the Mumbai Indians for the 2027 WPL season, the scheduling clash has posed a critical decision point.

The Women’s Premier League’s final rounds will overlap with a three-match Twenty20 International series between England Women and Sri Lanka on February 1, 3, and 5. Even if it means missing the bilateral series against Sri Lanka, the ECB has said that players will be able to complete their WPL responsibilities.

Nat Sciver-Brunt earned about £320,000 in the WPL, making him one of the league’s highest-paid players.

Sophie Ecclestone, who is slated to play for UP Warriorz in the 2027 season, remains one of just two England players retained by WPL teams. Only two English players, Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli, will take part in the WPL auction, which is scheduled for October 28 in Kochi.

Why is a scheduling conflict important?

If Nat Sciver-Brunt misses the Sri Lanka T20I series, she will have only captained England in four of the 14 T20Is played in the previous 12 months. Sciver-Brunt has already missed much of this year’s international cricket due to a calf ailment. She only played four games in England’s T20 World Cup campaign due to the same injury that held her out of the country’s May 2026 T20I series against India as she recovered.

Harry Brook’s precedence in giving England priority

Harry Brook’s choice about the men’s IPL was directly echoed by Winfield-Hill. After withdrawing from the 2025 IPL, Brook was forbidden from competing in the auction for two years. Despite the financial expense of withdrawing from the competition, Winfield-Hill underlined that Brook gave his England commitments primary priority.

Previously, the ECB has let players to forego bilateral T20Is in lieu of participating in the WPL. Four England players—Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge—arrived late for the New Zealand series during the 2024 WPL season due to WPL obligations.

Originally, the T20I series between Sri Lanka and England was scheduled to begin after the WPL concluded. However, the ECB and Sri Lanka Cricket have opted to move the Champions Trophy to the February window, therefore the series will begin before the WPL final stages.
