England Call Up Henry Crocombe as Ollie Robinson Injury Concern Grows Ahead of New Zealand Test
With ongoing fitness concerns over Ollie Robinson, England have called up promising fast bowler Henry Crocombe to their squad ahead of the Test against New Zealand. The development follows a brief period of uncertainty for Robinson, who experienced discomfort in the lead up to the eagerly awaited contest as England’s management monitored him closely.
Robinson has been a key figure in England’s pace attack over the past two years although, after missing out on both Tests against New Zealand back home earlier this summer because of repeated physical problems, his prospects for participation in the opening Test have looked doubtful. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has yet to comment on the seriousness of the issue, although team officials are being cautious so as not to compromise Archer’s future fitness.
Selectors have responded by calling upon 23-year-old Henry Crocombe, who has produced some eye-catching domestic cricket displays. The Sussex fast bowler is considered one of the most exciting young pace prospects in English cricket and a player who has regularly tested batters with his speed, bounce and movement on occasion.
Moreover, Crocombe provides England an extra pace option — as if they needed more — a chance to test his international fitness. While he is yet to play in the Test arena, his form for Western Australia domestically has been lauded by coaches and selectors. It is also a representation of the way England is working with fast buyers that will take over and move into the national set up when needed.
England already has a heavy schedule on their plate while gearing up for the Test series against New Zealand, and playing one of the premier teams in world cricket without an experienced bowler would be very tough. Robinson’s art of creating pressure and getting something out of the pitch has been essential to England, particularly in home conditions.
Team management will make the final call on Robinson’s involvement in closer proximity to the Test. Crocombe will stay with the squad until then as he trains like someone preparing to make his international debut.
With the New Zealand series of such importance, England will be praying Robinson is fit and Crocombe’s arrival gives a nice new dimension to the build-up.
