India Begin New ODI Era Against Afghanistan in Dharamsala
On Saturday, India will play Afghanistan in Dharamsala before beginning a three-match ODI series — the first of the next stage in their road to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Exciting encounters are in store, with the day-night opener at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium likely to fetch a lot of valuable opportunities for not only stars like Rohit and Shubman Gill but also reserves as hosts seek to assemble a settled one-day unit.
The series follows India completing their biggest win in Test match history by an innings and 300 runs over Afghanistan in a one-off Test days earlier. The emphatic win clearly underlined India’s current strength and the feeling of invincibility ahead of the ODI leg.
While Team India enters a new era in ODI cricket, Shubman Gill will captain the side. Meanwhile, India will not have veteran batter Virat Kohli for the series after he was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has replaced Kohli in the squad while, it is also reported that Hardik Pandya will not play the series due to injury concerns.
The Dharamsala venue is notorious for assisting batters and seam bowlers, particularly in the first phase of innings. Given the conditions and the location, fans can expect a great fight between these two sides who will be looking to get off to a winning start in this series.
The series is largely another chance for Afghanistan to challenge one of the strongest ODI sides on the planet. All this followed a low-key Test match for them, so led by some experienced voices and powered with a spin attack capable of challenging India in ODIs, the visitors would be looking at making amends to their disappointing Test performance.
While this is the first of a bilateral series, the first ODI may very well be more than that, especially with multiple players vying for spots, and upcoming international assignments. In doing so, it may place an early phone card in India’s cricketing road map for the next World Cup cycle as well as put Afghanistan on course for a sustained spell in international cricket.
